The computer security team at Bell Labs developed the following films (built into one video below), originally for the annual Skytop conference of Bell Labs executives. Although these films were created in 1990, many of the issues discussed are still relevant today.

"They were intended to be a wake-up call regarding computer security issues, and present a realistic view of then-plausible security breaches, along with accompanying set of worst-case scenarios."

"The computer security team at Bell Labs at the time took pains to get their message across at this particular meeting, handing out computer security awareness swag — water bottles! key rings! — even distributing copies of 2600: A Hacker's Quarterly. The idea was that it was high time that the entire staff took the threats seriously."

Yesterday, Apple announced the Developer Preview of OS X 10.8, or "Mountain Lion." At once, we decided to deploy the new operating system to one of our Macintosh systems. Since this is a Developer Preview, some bugs or issues may still exist, so I decided to install the operating system to a USB Flash Drive instead of the computer's primary hard drive.

I was unable to locate a tutorial with instructions for installing OS X to a USB Flash Drive, although several articles discussed placing the install media onto a USB Flash Drive. The following instructions describe a method for installing the OS X operating system (not the install media) onto a USB Flash Drive, allowing you to boost the Mountain Lion Developer Preview from a USB Flash Drive.

A majority of our web-based services will utilize the new MyZorveo ID, which use the email address (as the username) and password from the Account Manager to provide a single authentication mechanism. Some features of our website will not use the MyZorveo ID (the Zorveo Community, Project Manager and Web Hosting Control Panels). Password resets for your MyZorveo ID will occur through the Account Manager. The MyZorveo ID now allow you to login to the Zorveo website by clicking the “Login” button in the top black banner.
Data loss is a common experience for many computer users. The solution to this problem is simple: Backup your data at a specific interval. Data backup services are numerous and Windows and Mac OS X both include built-in backup applications. Conducting backups not only ensures that important data is not lost but allows one to return to a productive state within an hour if their computer experiences a serious software or hardware failure. Microsoft Windows 7 includes Backup and Restore, which creates copies of your most important personal files and allows the user to backup files manually or on a schedule. Backup locations can include another hard drive, removable media, DVD or network location (Network Location requires either Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.) Apple Mac OS X 10.5 and later include Apple’s Time Machine, which will automatically backup your entire computer, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, documents, etc. Time Machine keeps separate backups for each backup point allowing the user to return their computer to any previous backup point.

Earlier this afternoon, I wrote a simple PHP Load Average script to display the load averages on some of our servers. When reviewing possible options for writing the script, I located the sys_getloadavg() function, which is available in PHP5. This script does work with Safe Mode turned off. The script written is available below: <?php # Simple Load Average Script $load = sys_getloadavg(); $host = $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']; echo "Server: $host <br/>"; echo "Load Average 1: $load[0] <br/>"; echo "Load Average 5: $load[1] <br/>"; echo "Load Average 15: $load[2] <br/>"; ?> Or for those who enjoy the traditional load average style: <?php # Simple Load Average Script $load = sys_getloadavg(); echo "load average: $load[0] $load[1] $load[2]"; ?>

After receiving additional letters from the Domain Registry of America, we decided to repost this post from our old blog. Several of our customers have reported receiving ‚”Domain Name Expiration Notices”‚ from a organization called the ‚”Domain Registry of America‚”. To provide additional information to our customers and other domain owners, we have decided to post information about this issue. The letter received from the Domain Registry of America states ‚”You must renew your doamin name to retain exclusive rights to it on the Web, and now is the time to transfer and renew your name from your current Registrar to the Domain Registry of America.‚” However, your domain is not registered through the Domain Registry of America, even though the wording in this letter seems like it is. The company name itself seems like it is indeed misleading: The Domain Registry of America. Sounds like the company is responsible for all of the domain registrations in America, when in fact it is not. This technique is actually called Domain Slamming. The FTC has even filed suit again this company for their practices and violtations of a FTC Regulation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our [Read More]
